I had a difficult time making it to bed. It was as if I was walking in heavy sand and I didn’t know why. All I wanted to do was sleep which I promptly did. Out of God-knows-where came this recurring dream:
Allie Lea and I were swimming in dark waters.
She asked, “Where are we and why is it so dark? What happened to the Maya guides that were with us? I thought they were here to guide and protect us. I’m getting some most uncomfortable feelings regarding this place.”
As we emerged from the water I pulled out my flashlight and saw we were at the entrance of a large cenote or cavern. As I played the light over the cavern I saw several random stacks of what appeared to be wood.
“Ryan what is wood doing down here?”
“I don’t think they’re stacks of wood. They’re the remains of many hundreds of Maya who were sacrificed over the centuries.”
She shuddered, gave a shriek and said, “Let’s get out of here.”
With that she ran back into the water and started to swim like a person possessed. I yelled for her to stop and tried in vain to catch up with her. She was nowhere to be found. I surface dived looking for her, how many times I don’t know, without any luck. I began calling her name to no avail. All I heard was the lapping of the water and the dark silence that filled the cavern. Allie Lea had sunk beneath the water and was gone, gone, gone.
The next thing I knew Lynne was yelling and Allie Lea shaking me saying, “I’m here darling. You’re at home with your family. Wow! Your body is covered with perspiration, you’ve soaked the sheet.”
“What time is it?”
“Now, I know you need help. All that yelling and jumping around and—now—you want to know the time?”
I managed to sit up, grinned and said, “I guess those shrimp and crabs didn’t agree with me. What I need is a long, hot, shower and then we’ll talk.”
